How I’m overcoming Mind chatter in May!


We are 5 months into 2016, and I nearly had a panic attack when thinking about the goals I “planned” to accomplish by the end of the year. I sat on the edge of my bed reading through my journal, and thought … “What in the heck have I been doing?”… “I should be further along in my game plan?”

Luckily, I’ve been strengthening my self-compassion muscles over the past few months, and I heard a slight whisper disrupt the “mind chatter convention” happening in my head. A small yet powerful  phrase entered into my mind, “It’s OK that you’ve gotten off track. Give yourself permission to be human.”

Quick Positive Psych Nugget… 

Neuroscience research has proven that the human brain is wired to focus on the negative. Prehistorically this was a survival mechanism, but now we’ve carried this same wiring through hundreds of years.  The negative things always carry more weight. This is referred to as negativity bias. Even if your positive goal accomplishments out number the amount of goals that you did not achieve, your brain auto-shifts to the focus on the latter.

My Way Forward… 

In an effort to check my mental baggage at April’s backdoor, I decided to take inventory of 10 goals I accomplished over the past 4 months. At first, it took me a while to get started, but once I had written down at least 3 of them, I was on a roll. When I compared my list of accomplishments (personal and professional) with the goals I set at the top of the year, I realized that I’m actually doing better than I thought.

Taking written or verbal “accomplishment inventory”  is a great practice for your happiness toolkit. What I know for sure is that even though I may encounter a few detours along this journey, forward is the ultimate goal.

This month, I’m keeping my “mind chatter’ in check and leveling up my momentum with my May Mindset Plan. And as my tribe of accountability, I’m sharing this with you. I plan to:

  1. Recommit to meditation 10 minutes a day with the guided meditation app Headspace
  2. Reinstate my weekly inventory check of accomplishments
  3. Recommit to my seven #StartHappy agreements for happier living
